As we explore his work, we’ll encounter both Portaluppi the architect and Piero the man: erudite, witty, and full of joie de vivre. Along the way, we’ll uncover the symbolism woven into his decorative motifs, the thinking behind his commissions, and the ways his designs became deeply intertwined with Milanese society in the 1930s.

Our walk begins in the exclusive Porta Venezia district at Villa Necchi Campiglio, a masterpiece of Rationalism, a pinnacle of Portaluppi’s architectural output. Many other buildings capture Portaluppi’s evolving artistic vision, shaped by historical influences and his own inventive spirit. Nearby stands the monumental archway housing the Palazzo Buonarroti-Carpaccio-Giotto. Still in the same area, our walk takes us across the road to the Public Gardens, which house the Ulrico Hoepli Planetarium, a masterpiece of reinvented neoclassicism. As we stroll into the city centre, we'll admire even more examples of his work until we conclude the walk in the iconic Piazza Duomo, where his imprint can be seen all around, from the collaboration for the twin Arengario buildings that have housed the Museo del ‘900 since 2010 to the curious labyrinth pattern set into the pavement of the square.
