The Art of Authenticity

How do we determine whether a work of art is truly authentic? Beyond beauty and style, what can materials, techniques and signs of ageing reveal about an object’s origin and history? This visit takes us inside the Museo d’Arte e Scienza, the only educational museum in the world devoted to the study of authenticity and forgery in art and antiques.

Founded in 1990 by Gottfried Matthaes, the museum offers a fascinating dialogue between art history, craftsmanship and scientific analysis. Through paintings, ceramics, furniture, textiles, prints and other objects, we will explore the methods specialists use to distinguish an original from a later copy or a deliberate fake — learning to notice details that often remain invisible to the untrained eye.

The museum’s interactive approach will allow us to examine selected objects with microscopes, magnifying lenses and special lamps, putting some of these principles into practice and forming our own conclusions. More than a conventional museum visit, this is an invitation to look at art differently — with greater attention, curiosity and discernment. Duration: 90 minutes
