About this giro
This autumn, Palazzo Reale celebrates one of Milan’s most elegant and fascinating artistic chapters with Appiani. Il Neoclassicismo a Milano. The exhibition brings together more than a hundred works by Andrea Appiani (1754–1817) — the great Milanese painter who transformed the ideals of harmony, balance and beauty of classical art into the visual language of a modern, enlightened city.
Appiani’s refined portraits, graceful allegories and monumental scenes reveal the optimism and sophistication of late-18th-century Milan — a city caught between the Enlightenment and the Napoleonic era. His paintings capture both the elegance of the aristocracy and the energy of an age that believed in progress, reason and civic beauty.
Visiting with Giro in Piazza means going beyond the canvases to understand the world that inspired them: the royal palace that became a symbol of Milan’s transformation, the artists and patrons who surrounded Appiani, and the birth of a new aesthetic that still shapes the city’s identity today.
