About this giro

Step back almost two centuries with our guided tour of the GAM - Galleria di Arte Moderna di Milano. It's a captivating voyage through the art and history of the 19th century, set amidst the opulent architectural spaces and idyllic gardens of Villa Reale, GAM's historical home.

Milan's Modern Art Gallery boasts the largest municipal collection of 19th-century artworks in the city. From Neoclassicism to Symbolism, the collection contains a diverse array of masterpieces, reflecting the creativity and evolution of the era. With donations from Milanese citizens, the collection found its perfect home at Villa Reale in 1920.

Our tour aims to highlight the close relationship in Art History between gardens and their accompanying buildings, and more broadly between Nature, Art, and the artist's gaze. The garden of Villa Reale is indeed Milan's first English-style garden, contrasting with the Italian-style garden. We explore the seemingly spontaneous arrangement of trees as if it were a natural landscape, only to discover that nothing is accidental, just as the layout of architecture and statues is not random, but rather carefully designed to enhance the view from the villa and within the garden.

This observation extends to artworks depicting everyday scenes, where the artist's chosen perspective, specific angles reminiscent of photography, choice of format, and lighting scheme are all fundamental. Even the unique frames and the architectural container itself, the villa housing the collections, play a crucial role. This journey underscores how the artist's point of view is always deliberate and essential in the balance of their creation.
