Sala delle Asse restoration site

On the occasion of the Milan–Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Sala delle Asse opens exceptionally to the public during the final phase of its restoration, offering the rare opportunity to climb the site scaffolding and admire, from just a few centimetres away, the vault, the lunettes and the famous Leonardo monochrome, executed in charcoal in the late 15th century.

The guided tour leads participants through Leonardo’s techniques and those of his workshop, the conservation challenges involved, and the ongoing restoration process.

After a short introduction to Leonardo da Vinci’s presence at the Castello Sforzesco, the experience continues with access to the restoration site: wearing a safety helmet, visitors – in groups of no more than 8 people, to ensure safety and a more focused and engaging experience – can remain on the scaffolding for approximately 30 minutes, enjoying a rare and privileged viewpoint usually reserved for scholars and conservators.

• Meeting point 15 minutes before the start of the tour at the Castello Sforzesco Infopoint (beneath the Filarete Tower, main entrance to the Castle).

  
  

Additional information

• The group will consist of a maximum of 8 people.

• The tour is in English.

• Access is not recommended for those who suffer from vertigo, acrophobia, heart conditions, mobility difficulties, or claustrophobia.

• Access to the construction site area is via a designated, safe, and predetermined route.

• Visitors must be at least 14 years old.

• It is mandatory to wear suitable footwear (closed shoes with non-slip soles; no high heels, no open-toe shoes).

• It is mandatory to wear the provided personal protective equipment (PPE) for access (safety helmet).

• During the visit, it is necessary to pay attention to the warning and information signs on site, and to comply with all prohibitions and mandatory instructions; be mindful of any uneven surfaces, toe boards or pipes; always use the handrail when going up or down the stairs; always stay with the group.

• Photography on the scaffolding is not allowed.

• The tickets are not refundable.
